Local is Lekker, but Rooibos is Lekkerder!

September is Heritage Month in South Africa – a time when we celebrate the richness of our diverse cultures, traditions and the things that make us proudly South African. From braais and boerewors rolls to gumboot dancing, bunny chow and biltong, we have no shortage of heritage treasures that bring us together. But if there’s one homegrown product that captures the heart of the nation, it’s Rooibos.

Rooibos isn’t just lekker – it’s lekkerder! Here’s why:

  1. Born and bred in South Africa:
Unlike many other teas enjoyed worldwide, Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is indigenous to the Cederberg region of the Western Cape. It only grows here – nowhere else on earth – making it a truly South African gift to the world. For over 300 years, locals have been brewing its rich red infusion, long before it became an international wellness trend.
  2. It’s part of our heritage:
Rooibos has been passed down through generations. From the Khoikhoi and San who first discovered its uses, to the families today who serve it as a daily staple, it’s part of our national story. Ask almost any South African and they’ll recall growing up with a steaming cup of Rooibos in the mornings or after school.
  3. Naturally healthy:
Rooibos is caffeine-free, low in tannins and packed with antioxidants – a perfect choice for everyone, from toddlers to grandparents. Whether you’re calming a colicky baby, sharing a pot of the tisane with friends or winding down after a long day, Rooibos is a feel-good drink that loves you back.
  4. Versatile beyond measure:
South Africans don’t only sip Rooibos – we cook with it, bake with it and even use it in skincare. It makes a brilliant base for iced teas, cocktails and smoothies. You’ll find Rooibos-infused gins, craft beers and even Rooibos-spiced braai marinades. Truly, there’s no end to its creativity.
  5. A unifier across cultures:
Just like a braai, Rooibos brings people together. Whether it’s served black, with a splash of milk, a spoon of honey or even a slice of lemon, everyone has their own perfect way of making it. No matter your background, Rooibos is something we all share – a small but powerful symbol of unity.
  6. Good for the planet:
Heritage Month is also about looking forward and Rooibos represents sustainability. Grown in harmony with nature in the unique fynbos biome, Rooibos is farmed with care for the land and its communities. When we choose Rooibos, we support local farmers, jobs and the preservation of South Africa’s biodiversity.
  7. A global ambassador of South African pride:
From New York to Tokyo, Rooibos has found its way onto shelves and menus worldwide, yet it remains proudly South African. Every time someone abroad sips Rooibos, they’re tasting a piece of our heritage. It’s a reminder that “local is lekker” – and when it’s Rooibos, it’s even lekkerder!

This September, as we honour the many flavours, sounds and traditions that make our nation unique, let’s not forget to raise a cup to Rooibos – a truly South African brew.
