Stress, exercise, cancer and quality are key topics included in the SA Rooibos Council product research portfolio for 2010:
  • Investigating the cancer-prevention properties of South African herbal teas: A project at the Medical Research Council, led by Prof. Wentzel Gelderblom.
  • Developing objective `quality and sensory parameters for Rooibos: Research done at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) under the leadership of Prof. Lizette Joubert.
  • Looking at the influence of Rooibos on stress: Dr Amanda Swart leads this study at Stellenbosch University.
  • Looking at Rooibos and exercise: A new project of Prof. Jeanine Marnewick at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
  • A study on the influence of processing on the microbial risk associated with Rooibos tea: A project lead by Prof. Pieter Gouws at the University of the Western Cape
  • Finding the answer to the question: What exactly is in a cup of Rooibos tea? Prof. Andrew Marston leads this project at the University of the Free State. He is collaborating with Prof. Lizette Joubert, as well as a research team in Norway on this project.
The following projects are currently funded (2010) to improve Rooibos crop quality and yield:
  • BOC (Biological, Organic & Chemical) Project focussed on integrated pest management; led by Dr Justin Hatting, Small Grain Institute, Agricultural Research Council (ARC)
  • Genetic improvement of the Rooibos plant, led by Colette Cronjé, Rooibos Limited
  • The production of healthy organic rooibos, led by Dr Sandra Lamprecht, Plant Protection Research Institute, Agricultural Research Council
